What is the Medical Training Pathway?

Medical staff include doctors, nurses, care assistants and other suitably qualified support workers who work within the NHS, private practice, private clinics, and residential and nursing homes. They are required to continuously take part in relevant continued professional development in order to keep their medical and clinical skills up to date.

Medical Training Pathway

The medical training pathway is the route of study that a person undertakes in order to qualify as a doctor.

The first step is around 6 years of undergraduate training in medicine. After this comes a period of post-graduate training, via the foundation programme and higher specialist training. The foundation programme consists of 2 years in general practice.

After completing a foundation programme, doctors will then choose to either follow the route of general practice or a specific specialist area, of which there are around 60 options. This can take anything from around 3 years for general practice, up to 7 years for other specialties.

The Acute Care Common Stem (ACCS) is a speciality higher training option for those wishing to specialise in emergency medicine. This includes anaesthesia, GIM, and AIM.

Training

Specialist training providers can provide individuals or organisations with a complete medical training package, either for those who are looking to complete continued professional development or for those who are looking to upskill and progress. These courses ensure that staff are working to the highest standard and delivering the highest quality of patient care, regardless of their workplace setting.

Specialist courses for registered professionals include options such as administration of controlled drugs, continence awareness, intramuscular injections and nephrostomy care training.
