How to Budget for Commercial Kitchen Design

Commercial kitchen design costs are not just the price of the equipment to fit out your kitchen. It is best to plan each cost separately to help control the overall budget for your new kitchen.

Separate Design Fees From Equipment Costs

It’s also worth noting that a designer’s fee for the design of a commercial kitchen and the cost of the commercial kitchen equipment are two separate costs. The designer’s fee can range from £1,500 to £5,000 depending on the complexity of the kitchen design and the amount of space the designer has to play with. The cost of the commercial kitchen equipment can range from £8,000 for a very small kitchen to £30,000 + for a mid-sized kitchen.

Set a Contingency of 15 to 20 Per Cent

A contingency fund of 15-20% on top of the overall project cost is essential for unexpected structural problems or equipment changes. The hire of temporary facilities to aid completion can also be costly for a period of time.

Prioritise Extraction and Refrigeration

Don’t be so frugal on the cost of proper ventilation and cold storage. Both will have health and safety restrictions placed upon them and can cost an arm and a leg to put right after the fact. Finishings to worktops and the cost of shelving are far easier to cut back on without compromising on the function of the kitchen.

Budget for Building Services Separately

These services, which can include new gas supplies, three phase electrical connections, drainage and water feeds, can cost anywhere between £5,000 and £15,000 to implement. These should be cost separately and included in the main project budget.

Include Compliance and Planning Costs

Even the cost of compliance with legislation can vary. Approved Ventilation, Building Control approval and other issues to consider will cost around £500 to £1,500 plus time.

It’s far better to have a clear budget made up of various different costs rather than an unknown single sum.
