Brise Soleil Fire Safety Considerations

Solar shading adds value to a building. As part of the building’s external envelope, the solar shading system is part of the building’s fire safety.

Check Combustibility Classifications

The materials used for the façade above 18m high need to be classified under BS EN 13501-1 to meet Class A2-s1, d0 or better. Below 18m high the rules are less stringent but the use of aluminium fins with a non-combustible core would be the preferred option.

-Understand How Cladding Regulations Apply

Approved Document B (BB550) and the Building Safety Act 2022 have to be considered for Brise Soleil systems which are treated as external wall attachments. A full system (fins, fixings and backing material etc) should have been assessed as a whole and not as individual parts.

Consider Fire Spread Across the Façade If you are looking for Brise Soleil, see //alusystems.uk/brise-soleil-solar-shading.

Poorly spaced fins or those near the window reveals can channel heat and fire upwards. Ensure that the clearance to openings is in line with BR 187 guidance and has been adequately reviewed by the fire engineer.

Confirm Compartmentation Is Unaffected

Solar shading brackets, for example, may pass through insulation and cavity barriers. Where such brackets penetrate through a façade, they must be properly fire-stopped in order not to compromise compartmentation.

Talk to Building Control Early

Don’t wait until the structure is complete before undertaking these checks as changes could incur costly remedial work.
