Signs You Need to Bleed a Radiator

When your radiator was turned on for the first time after months of not being used, did it seem like there was a lot of excess noise or effort to warm up? Or did it seem like it took forever to get warm or didn’t get warm at all? Sometimes it seems like a heating unit can’t reach certain temperatures and it always takes forever before it’s warm enough. So, what’s going on?

First off, check the heating is turned on correctly. If it is and you are still hearing gurgling sounds and experiencing cold spots on the radiators then it is probably as a result of trapped air. Trapped air usually prevents water from travelling properly and getting heated up by your radiator, which causes cold spots and poor heating. So how often should you bleed a radiator? If, while the heating is on, the bottom half of your radiators is noticeably colder than the top half, then this probably means that your radiators are working the wrong way and need bleeding. Bleed a radiator by turning the heating off and waiting a few seconds until the water starts to drain. Using a radiator bleed key, untighten the radiator valve and collect any excess water that drains.  Then, go ahead and turn it back on and see if it works better. It will probably only take a few seconds but it will be a lot more efficient.
