A leaking steering rack problem can get worse really fast. So early detection will save you lots of money and prevent lots of other problems.
Oily Patches Under the Front Axle
When the car is parked on a clean, dry surface, check under the car, after a few hours or so, for oily patches or even a small puddle. This oily patch can be a slightly amber or reddish coloured patch near the front axle.
Dropping Power Steering Fluid Level
By looking at the Power Steering Reservoir (under the bonnet) you can check for the Power Steering Fluid Level dropping off without any obvious reason for it to do so.
Stiff or Inconsistent Steering Feel
A slow leak of power steering fluid can result in the steering feeling very heavy and often will be worse when driving slowly, such as when parking up. This is due to the lack of fluid under pressure that the steering rack needs to function correctly.
Cracked or Wet Rubber Gaiters
Look for signs of rubber gaiters at the ends of the rack cracking, leaking or being split or leaking oily fluid.

Fluid Smell Near the Engine Bay
A power steering fluid smell can become very pungent if a leak has come into contact with undercarriage components whilst hot. A sweet burnt smell can emanate from components located near to the engine bay areas.
By recognising these signs as soon as possible, you can minimise the damage, thereby ensuring that simple repairs can be made instead of having to replace the entire steering rack.
