Our ancestors did not have the bright lights that we now have to help us overcome the long hours of winter darkness. Our brains are still rooted in this time when we lived more closely with nature, and this means that if we try to stay as active as we did in the summer, it can have a detrimental effect on our health. In those days, when it got dark, work stopped for the day and people spent time indoors sheltering from the cold and the dark.

Making sure that your bedroom is suitable for sleep is important – the environment that we sleep in should be the right temperature, as well as making us naturally feel more relaxed. Having lights that are too bright in the bedroom can have a detrimental effect on our sleep pattern. As well as lights, phones and televisions can also cause problems sleeping, so try not to have these in your bedroom if you want to get a good night’s sleep.

A bedtime routine also helps to get the brain ready for bed. Start to unwind in the evening, and don’t drink alcohol or caffeine. Instead, herbal tea or a milky drink can help get your body ready for rest. A hot bath can also help, especially if you use relaxing aromatherapy oils that aid sleep such as lavender and camomile.
